The Red Star

A little backstory to the event on Tuesday. Nothing fancy, just a little something something ^^ Enjoy!

The Red Star: Backstory

It was an unpleasant sight, but one that had grown all too familiar these past nights. And indeed, as day became night, more bodies had been found. This time, they were discovered on the very Temple grounds themselves, as if to offer a final insult to the slaughter. Piled together were the corpses of five Highborne, like some amalgamated grotesquery, partially melted together in fire. It was an unpleasant sight, but the smell of burnt flesh bore heavier on Salirien’s senses.

She was growing frustrated. It had been over a week since former Sister Sendil Lirith had broken from the Temple, and wardens had been brought in to hunt her. But she was not alone, which was the true worry. Sendil had garnered support within the Temple before her betrayal, bringing several sisters with her, some of which held respect on their own. The thought made Salirien frown. It stirred a wrath in her that she preferred left alone. Sisters Valeesa Stormfirst, who took too great a pleasure in burning her enemies, and Galgalia Tallstar had been the first to follow Sendil. Others had followed the next night, and then others still.

Sendil Lirith, devout to the point of fanatic zealotry, had been vocal about the “neutralisation” of the Highborne, until the very night she turned her back on Darnassus. And now, with every passing night, more and more Highborne corpses showed up in the capital, and the Temple still struggled to locate Sendil and her followers.

“So much force was used,” whispered Elondore, a plump little priestess with a maternal face and a caring touch. She was kneeling down by the scorched grotesquery, inspecting it with a frown. Her expression was revulsion and worry in equal measure. Salirien did not blame her. Charred faces, fixed as though still screaming, limbs jutting out from the heap in unnatural angles, and the posture of the thing, which made it hard to identify as humanoid. Salirien had a creeping suspicion that Galgalia Tallstar had been part of the murder this time. She had a fascination for the grotesque and, some would say, unnatural. Too many questions she asked, and rarely did she stop at “no”.

“This cannot go on much longer. How long before the populace finds out? How long before the people squirm in fear? If they squirm in fear at the sight of priestesses-” Elondore asked, her voice a bitter reminder of what was at stake. Yet as gruesome as the murders had been, what was almost more worrisome was the inventory missing from the Temple’s Reliquary. Sendil Lirith had a vision, strong followers and enough tricks up her sleeves to pose a threat. Elondore touched at the grotesquery, and jumped in surprise as a bone creaked out of angle. She stood, wiping blood on a piece of cloth.

“We need greater aid in this, Salirien. They must be brought down, and swiftly. Few are those that mourn the death of the Highborne, true, but they are citizens of Darnassus, by Tyrande’s wish. Sendil may very well turn her attention to the Temple next, and with the items she stole from the Reliquary…” Elondore huffed, her hands meeting in front of her generous figure, hid in her sleeves. “Red Star,” she repeated, a name spoken oft the few passing nights, her face twisting as though the words themselves were venom on her lips. “A disgrace to the Temple. A disgrace to us all.”

Salirien bowed as Elondore walked by, leaving her to gaze upon the grotesquery. She recalled with regret the nights she had spent talking with Mafther Moonshroud, another who had followed Sendil and her faction. Mafther was a tall woman, taller than most men, wielding two maces on the field of battle, a storm of death and Light amidst her enemies. She was old, though Salirien had never learnt just how old she was, but she was a woman of fortitude and generosity. And now, even she had turned her back on the Goddess.

The faint echoes of Salirien’s boots were her sole companions as she crossed the bridge down to central Darnassus at the break of night. She gazed up to the sky, a canvass of black, embroidered with stars. It was bitterly that she spotted red stars amidst the white. They were always so visible in the sky. She cursed that it was not so down below.

Thon is still in the Dens, but I got my mage, Reerenath. He is not part of the Order IC, however. He is a highborne though! Would I be able to perhaps attend with him?
